I think there’s another reason people in sabbaticals end up doing so much stuff: in this capitalist system we are encouraged to keep grinding and end up not having energy or time for the things we really want to do, so when we take sabbaticals we fill them with those things, the hobbies we want to get better at, the old hobbies we’ve always wanted to revive, the people we wanted to meet, the project we wanted to start, etc. Because time is precious and you need to get going with those things before the sabbatical ends!
YES - that's very true - what emerges out of an empty space can also be our passions, the trick is distinguishing the distractions (e.g. time-fillers or patterns from the old life) from the calling (e.g. what we really want to focus on next, post-transition - much of which we will not know yet because it's an unknown unknown) and that can be tricky hence the benefit in creating spaciousness for reflection and moving more slowly. The keep-grinding capitalist mentality can be applied to 'fun' things too haha. (PS Curious to hear what will be part of your time off :)
Reading this makes me think about the Blog I started in 2014. While starting and the first few posts was not too slow, after that I realised I needed to maintain quality and so kept delaying doing another post... and delaying... and delaying... until I realised I even forgot which platform I posted it on. I found it and started thinking about another post... and then continued thinking... and then delayed... and guess what... still no post. One day...
Ahah this is the way! Do you still want to write one? I'm curious if you think the desire for quality you mentioned has interfered with your posting? I'm noticing my perfectionist tendencies coming up a lot, and needing to manage my own internal joy in writing with an external concern about how it will be received.
Yes would like to write again and absolutely the desire for quality is hindering that! And I know some of the advice to improve quality is to start producing and creating output and with time quality will improve but easier said than done ;)
Definitely easier said than done... and also, it will be done in your time, there's no hurry or rush, and no pressure other than that which we set for ourselves. A question could be: why do you write? Maybe it's about clarifying your thoughts, or creative self-expression, or balancing your mind, etc. Then when you feel called, to write for this reason alone for yourself- no need to share it with anyone, or even think about anybody else, write for pure pleasure and enjoyment. What might come out?
